Low-cost commercial gas

Depending on the industrial sector, your business probably has some unique requirements on the gas supply and heat saving measures. Gas is significantly cheaper per unit than electricity – currently by about 300 %! It’s worth keeping in mind, however, that electric systems are usually more efficient than gas boilers. And, whereas some companies may benefit from special economy tariffs for the electricity supply, these are not available for the supply of gas. At United British Electra, we know how to manoeuvre the price maze through low-cost commercial energy rates.

Overhead charges resulting from energy bills probably make up a large chunk of your company’s monthly costs. The first step to reducing energy costs at your company is to optimise energy usage and consumption by implementing some easy-to-follow energy saving measures. For example, when offices or conference rooms are not in use during the winter months, you could consider turning down the radiators to Level 1 and then turning them up again to Level 2 or 3 when the rooms are occupied. We’ll be glad to advise you directly, particularly on the installation of smart thermostats, but you can also read our energy-saving tips here.

Switching your commercial gas supplier

It sometimes only takes five working days to switch gas suppliers, but this can lead to some big savings. Some suppliers offer what is known as a “dual fuel discount”, where you can save money if you sign up for both gas and electricity from one source, but the best deal is always the one that fits to your company’s specific requirements.

At United British Electra, your individually assigned account manager will not only compare the most competitive energy prices for you, but also check that you’re getting the best deal for your industrial or commercial demands. Should our quote appeal to you, your account manager will accompany you through the entire process – from locking in your low tariff rates to switching suppliers on your behalf. We’ll even remind you when your next contract renewal is due, with enough time in advance to find you a cheaper offer if required. To ensure that your business can depend on a stable electricity supply well into the future, we only work with gas suppliers who we trust. You can count on us!

The future of gas heating

It’s no news that fossil fuels are detrimental to our environment, and gas is a fossil fuel. As such, no new gas boilers will be installed in new-build homes from 2025 on. To help business owners replace on-site gas boilers with heat pumps, for example, the government offers grants of up to £5,000 as long as you inter alia own the property that you’re applying for, your current heating system was installed after 2022, and you’re in possession of a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). Your account manager at United British Electra will be glad to advise you further.

FAQs

Which types of tariffs are there for business gas contracts?

The most popular type of tariff is the Fixed-Rate tariff. This will keep your commercial gas rate locked in for the duration of your contract, safeguarding you from any price increases. If you wish to benefit, however, from any price decreases on the gas market and enjoy taking risks, a Variable-Rate tariff might suit you best. Here, your unit price is likely to vary every month, but you could make some very large savings.

How expensive is commercial gas at the moment?

As of October 2023, commercial gas rates have basically remained steady this year and are almost one third cheaper per unit than one year ago. However, as gas prices are influenced by various factors, it’s never possible to make a forecast.

I owe my current gas supplier money. Can I still switch?

Yes! As long as your debt is no older than 28 days, it will simply be transferred over to your new supplier and added to your first bill. If the debt is older than 28 days, you’ll need to pay it first before you can switch.

Why is commercial energy more expensive than domestic energy?

There are a few reasons why you’ll pay more for a commercial energy contract. Firstly, businesses pay a standing charge per day, regardless of how much energy is used. Secondly, businesses pay 20% VAT for commercial energy (private households pay only 5% VAT).Finally, businesses must pay the green Climate Change Levy, which is currently set at 0.775p for electricity and 0.672p for gas.

Our business is spread over several sites. Can we get one offer and one contract for all meters?

It’s often the case that a business, such as hotels, clinics or educational facility, may comprise several buildings. Here, you can request a multi-site meter that will group all of your sites onto one contract and one bill. This is often preferable than receiving and keeping an eye on several different bills.
