Low-cost commercial electricity

Every business and every industrial sector has unique requirements when it comes to optimising the supply of commercial electricity. At United British Electra, we know how to rise to these challenges. The first step to saving the money spent on electricity at your company and reducing your overheads is, of course, to optimise your energy consumption by implementing some specific energy saving measures. These can be simple steps that every employee can follow, such as keeping doors and windows closed in winter when the heating system is on or keeping your office radiators free from dirt and dust. We’ll be glad to advise you directly, but you can also read our initial tips here.

Switching electricity providers or tariffs is likely to bring you the biggest electricity savings and that’s exactly where United British Electra can help. A switch can get you out of an over-priced rollover deal and potentially save you hundreds of pounds every year, but it can be difficult to navigate such a broad market in search of the best deals. According to a recent study conducted across six European countries, 47 % of consumers are not even aware of the product portfolios offered by their own current suppliers! Furthermore, changing to cheaper electricity rates may not always be the best decision for your particular business, especially if your particular requirements are industry-specific. This can all be very confusing and take valuable time away from handling your day-to-day business operations.

FAQs

Which business electricity tariffs are there?

There are several types of electricity tariff. Here are the most popular:
A fixed-rate tariff gives you certainty in what you pay, regardless of any changes on the electricity market, and is good for long-term business budgeting.
Flexible tariffs are good for businesses with large consumption volumes. When your contract begins, the electricity is purchased in bulk, which can often result in cheaper unit rates at almost wholesale prices.
Renewable tariffs apply for green energy which, in the meantime, often costs the same as electricity generated by non-renewable methods.

Are business energy rates still rising?

It’s now October 2023 and commercial energy rates have been going down the last few months. Today, you can expect to pay about 50p – or about 60% - less
per kWh of electricity than in one year ago.

Why is commercial energy more expensive than domestic energy?

There are a few reasons why you’ll pay more for a commercial energy contract. Firstly, businesses pay a standing charge per day, regardless of how much energy is used. Secondly, businesses pay 20% VAT for commercial energy (private households pay only 5% VAT).Finally, businesses must pay the green Climate Change Levy, which is currently set at 0.775p for electricity and 0.672p for gas.

What is the Energy Bill Discount Scheme?

The government has introduced the Energy Bills Discount Scheme (EBDS) to support businesses during periods of high energy prices (it replaces the Energy Bill Relief Scheme (EBRS)). As of April 2023 until March 2024, the EBDS offers businesses a discount on their electricity usage. This discount is applied automatically to your bill when wholesale electricity prices are particularly high. The EBDS is subject to a maximum discount that depends on whether your business operates within an electricity intensive industry or not. Electricity intensive businesses can expect a maximum discount of 8.9p/kWh with a threshold of 18.5p/kWh. All other businesses can expect a maximum discount of 1.961p/kWh with a wholesale electricity rate threshold of 30.2p/kWh.
